Spike Renewables Srl is particularly focused on biomass and bioenergy/biofuels, given the background of the founder members and the experts involved in the activities. Technologies on which Spike, through its personnel, has a specific expertise are biomass thermochemical conversion (torrefaction, pyrolysis, gasification, HTL) and biofuel processes, both first and second generation biofuels. In this area Spike has already established and ongoing collaborations with industries on biomass technologies: these actions are aimed at developing new processes for bioenergy and biofuels. Examples of industrial collaborations are upgrading by esterification and emulsification of fatty acidy rich oils, and biomass thermochemical conversion. Spike also carry out detailed engineering of these processes and plants. Current works are focused on microalgae industrial plants for biofuel applications. In addition, in order to complete the chain, the Company covers even the agronomic and agricultural aspects, especially as regards the crops for biofuel production and other non-food oil crops. Spike Renewables Srl is funder member of RE-CORD Consortium, spin off of the University of Florence.
