The Consiglio per la ricerca in agricoltura e l'analisi dell'economia agraria (CREA) is a National Research Organization which operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, with general scientific competence within the fields of agriculture, agroindustry, food, fishery and forestry. It was established with the legislative decree n.454/99 and gathers together the experience of 28 Agricultural Research Institutes and their relative 54 peripheral operational units for a total of 82 offices throughout the nation.
The Research unit for swine husbandry (CREA-SUI) is located in the Po Valley, where some among the most famous Italian PDO foods (i.e., food specialties with Protected Designation of Origin), such as Prosciutto di Parma and Parmigiano-Reggiano, were developed. The CRA-SUI research unit studies the influence of rearing methods and nutrition on production efficiency, animal welfare, and quality characteristics of the pig carcasses, meat and fat deposits, either for fresh human consumption or for food processing. It evaluates the influence of the rearing factors on their environmental impact, and pursues the exploitation of pig slurry and manure for agricultural and non agricultural purposes.
