The Institute for Environmental Biotechnology (Graz University of Technology) is located in Graz, Austria, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Gabriele Berg. Our institute consists of approx. 30 members including PostDocs, PhDs, master students, and technical assistants. We are currently involved in several national and international projects concerning several aspects of microbial ecology and biotechnology, as well as metagenomics and bioprospecting. We have strong collaboration with other research center such as the Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology (ACIB GmbH).
One of our key research areas is the comprehensive analysis of the structural and functional diversity of microbiomes, especially of those that are associated to eukaryotic hosts. We have a special focus on antagonistic microbes, which are characterized by their ubiquitous and cosmopolitan occurrence. Furthermore, we apply our knowledge to solve environmental problems or to develop ecological friendly process and alternatives for the agricultural and biotechnology fields. In this regard, we have developed several plant protecting products on the basis of bacterial antagonist against fungal plant pathogens. We are also interested in the characterization and application of enzymes and bioactive compounds obtained from several biodiversity studies.

Scientific cooperation in bioprospecting/ metagenomics
We are searching for interesting industrial applications for different novel metagenome enyzmes (biocatalysts) that we have discovered. We are very interested in starting new cooperation projects with the industry. For applications of third-party funds (EU, Austria, Italy) etc) we could we involved as academic and also indutrial partner (TU Graz, ACIB GmbH).
